Everton: Keith Wyness tells Angus Kinnear to ‘move on’ after ‘incredible’ controversy
Everton chief executive Angus Kinnear should not waste his time complaining about refereeing decisions during the season.
That is the view of former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, as Everton are to lodge a formal complaint with the PGMOL after their defeat at West Ham last time out.
The Toffees believe they should have had a penalty late in the game when Mateus Fernandes appeared to handle the ball inside the penalty area.
Despite a VAR review, a penalty was not awarded, and West Ham went on to score a late winner through Callum Wilson’s strike, which could have repercussions for Everton’s European hopes.
The defeat leaves Everton two points off the final European spot in the Premier League table, with four matches remaining.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that Kinnear will not get anywhere complaining about the decision to the PGMOL.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness does believe though that referees need to be held more accountable for their decisions.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’m afraid it’s time to move on. I have been in Angus’ position, and I have made complaints to the referees. And where did it get me? Absolutely nowhere.
“This was, to me, a wrong decision. It was clear. One of my benchmarks on this is when I asked my friends who were Liverpool fans what they thought, they agreed. That’s very unusual for them to agree with that. So it must have been pretty blatant.
“It is strange how this was not even referred to VAR in that sense and VAR said it was accidental. Anybody who’s looked at it would question that. But, complaining isn’t going to make any difference right now. This is part of an ongoing situation.
“In my time, we used to have an end-of-season wrap up with the head of referees. You should have referees there maybe three or four times a season now and a continual review of the process.
“That’s when these sorts of things could be aired rather than having to make it on decision by decision. There’s got to be more frequent meetings with the head of referees and an accountability about things like this, because Everton’s not the only one.
“There have been quite a few recently that have given us all questions. But this one, in my view, was incredible that this did not get given.”
Everton agree £30m sponsorship deal
Wyness also told Football Insider that he has praised Everton’s ownership for agreeing a new shirt sponsor deal with CMC Markets.
The deal is believed to be worth around £30million a year, and could be an increase on the club’s current sponsorship with gambling firm Stake.
Everton may be joined by Premier League rivals Fulham in agreeing a deal with CMC Markets, as clubs look to replace gambling companies on their shirts before new Premier League rules come into force next season.
It is another deal which looks set to boost Everton’s revenue, as moving to Hill Dickinson Stadium has already provided the club with commercial benefits.
