Sources: Everton in talks to sack Frank Lampard and appoint interim boss

Everton have discussed the possibility of sacking Frank Lampard if they lose to Man United at Saturday lunchtime, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Premier League club are plotting what would be an extraordinary move in a desperate bid to avoid relegation.

A source close to Everton has told Football Insider that Lampard could be dismissed if his team lose against United at Goodison Park in the 12.30pm kick-off.

Talks have been held behind the scenes about executing a last-gasp dugout change to preserve the club’s lengthy top-flight status.

Everton chiefs believe the 30-game mark represents the last realistic opportunity to parachute in a new boss and give him time to make a mark.

Discussions have taken place over appointing an interim manager on a deal initially running until the end of the season.

Lampard is under huge pressure to keep his job, just over two months after replacing Rafael Benitez.

The former Chelsea boss was appointed on 31 January on a two-and-a-half-year contract running until the summer of 2024.

But he has failed to oversee the improvement that the Everton board, led by majority owner Farhad Moshiri, had hoped.

Instead the team are in freefall and have lost 17 of their last 22 Premier League matches.

The 3-2 midweek defeat to Burnley leaves Lampard’s team 17th in the table, just one point ahead of Sean Dyche’s side and having played the same number of teams.

Defeat to United would see the Everton set a new club record of 19 losses in a 38-game Premier League season.
