Everton move for goal machine on the rocks as £20m playmaker bid is sanctioned - report
By Danny Wright
Everton’s pursuit of Wayne Rooney could be over as Ronald Koeman has sanctioned a bid for Ajax playmaker Davy Klaassen, according to a report.
The Daily Mirror claims that the Merseysiders are willing to splash £20million on the 24-year-old to bolster their midfield amid news that Koeman has made him his summer priority.
It is understood that a successful move for Klaassen would effectively end Rooney’s hopes of reviving his career back at Goodison Park.
His move to the Toffees is now on the rocks after he disappointed the club with his lacklustre display against Swansea last week.
Manchester United are desperate to get the goal machine off their wage bill despite him finding the net 252 times in 553 appearances for the club.

The Mirror claims that Ronald Koeman personally scouted Klaassen while playing for Ajax against Lyon earlier this week and has since made him his No 1 transfer target for the summer.
The 11-times Netherlands international has scored a stunning 19 goals and provided 12 assists for Ajax this season in 46 appearances across all competitions.
He bagged two goals in the Europa League quarter-final in the 2-0 win against Schalke and now the Dutch giants look good to qualify for a potential final with Man United after a 4-1 win over Lyon on Wednesday.
Everton will be in need of new midfielders in the summer as Ross Barkley has cast doubts over his future by dragging out his contract talks while the Daily Mail have recently claimed that Newcastle are plotting a £20million bid for James McCarthy.
Football Insider Verdict
Ajax is a breeding ground of unbelievable talent and Koeman will 100 per cent know that having spent spells in Amsterdam as both a player and a manager. Klaassen is a player that oozes talent and is also a great leader having been captain of the Ajax side for the past two years. At 24-years-of-age, Klaassen is about to hit the peak of his career and for £20million it seems like a good deal when McCarthy could go to Newcastle for the same fee. As for Rooney, the United legend’s career has hit a lot of uncertainty and whether he can play for one of the Premier League’s top teams remains to be seen. If Everton don’t want him – who else in the top seven would take him?
