Everton submit offer as Koeman turns sights to new Premier League defender - report

By Harvey Byrne

Ronald Koeman has made a £1.25million bid for Southampton right-back Cuco Martina, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claims that the Dutch manager is looking to bring competition into the club for established first choice Seamus Coleman.

Koeman brought Martina to the Saints and the Premier League after he agreed a two-year contract when he transferred from Jong Twente last summer.

The 26-year-old full-back played in 18 encounters last season with his only goal of the campaign being a spectacular strike against Arsenal.

The Saints have added right-back Jeremy Pied to their squad this summer to act as back-up to first choice Cedric Soares, meaning that Martina has found himself well down in the pecking order.

The 27-time capped Curacao international has not been included in either of Claude Puel’s matchday squads in the new campaign.

Coleman has not featured under his new manager yet, after the Republic of Ireland international suffered an ankle injury and midfielder James McCarthy has been filling in the right-wing back role in his absence.

Koeman has been keen to add players with Premier League experience to his squad in his short time in charge of the Toffees.

The Dutch manager has so far added Maarten Stekelenburg, Idrissa Gueye, Ashley Williams and Yannick Bolasie as he looks to return the Goodison Park club to European football.

In other Everton transfer news, Toffees target Joe Hart has been left furious at his treatment by Manchester City.
