Everton are plotting to hold talks with forward David Henen as he nears the end of his contract at Goodison Park, according to a report.
The Liverpool Echo claims that Henen, 21, may potentially move away Merseyside in the summer transfer window unless he earns a new deal with Everton.
Under-23s manager David Unsworth believes that Henen can still impress in Premier League 2 to be able to be offered new terms.
“Absolutely, of course he can get a new one but performances will dictate that,” Unsworth said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“Monday night (v Derby County) wasn’t his finest hour but he’s got pace, he scores a goal and when he’s at his best, he’s a real threat and has been absolutely fantastic for us over the years."
Henen has never made a senior appearance for Everton ever since he originally signed on loan from Olympiacos in 2014 before making his deal permanent a year later.
The rapid centre-forward, known for his pace, has made 10 appearances in Premier League 2 this term, scoring three goals.
The former Belgium Under-19 international has previously had spells at Anderlecht and Monaco, but his only taste of senior football in England has come in a loan spell at Fleetwood Town.
Football Insider verdict
Henen does not appear as though he will ever get near to first-team football at Everton. The striker was instrumental in the Under-23s side that won the Premier League 2 title last season and would have perhaps hoped he would get a chance in the senior squad. However Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce have since spent big bucks on padding out the first-team, meaning players like Henen are nowhere near a Premier League bow. It's best for all parties if he leaves in the summer. Henen is 21-years-old but has just 13 appearances under his belt in senior football. That is simply not enough and he should not sign a new contract.
