Everton would prefer 'transfer ban' punishment with appeal verdict imminent, says expert

Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has insisted a "transfer ban" would be the preferred punishment for the Toffees if their points deduction appeal is successful.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted a financial penalty is a more sensible outcome if the deduction is overturned.

Everton were deducted 10 points in November 2023 after breaching the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules and chose to appeal the decision.

It is believed that appeal concluded on 2 February and a verdict is now just days away.

Sean Dyche's side currently sit in the Premier League relegation zone, one point behind Luton Town in 17th.

The removal of the Toffees' points penalty would see them rise to 13th in the table on 29 points.

Everton didn't make a signing in the January window and completed just two permanent deals last summer (2023).

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The January window was effectively a transfer ban on all clubs because nothing happened.

“From what I know, I think a transfer ban is what Everton would prefer, should the points deduction be removed.

“But the sanction has got to fit the crime.

“This was a financial issue, so I think a fine should really be the way through this if the appeal is successful.”
