Everton receive emphatic response after last-ditch defender enquiry - report
By Aramide Oladipo
Everton have failed in their attempt to sign Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen on the final day of the summer transfer window, according to a report.
The Liverpool Echo claims that the Spanish giants are not willing to offload the 31-year-old this summer despite holding negotiations with the Toffees throughout deadline day.
The newspaper reports that the Merseyside club had approached the La Liga side over a loan deal for the central defender with an option to a permanent move next season but the offer was rebuffed by the Catalans.
The report claims that Everton boss Ronald Koeman thought that Vermaelen was the perfect player to provide the squad with extra cover in the central and left-back positions this season.
The Belgian has failed to make the desired impact at the Camp Nou since securing a permanent deal three years ago.

Vermaelen was sent out on loan to Serie A outfit Roma last season where he suffered a serious injury which hindered his time on the football pitch, featuring in only 11 matches.
The Belgium international has yet to feature for Barcelona in their opening four competitive matches this season.
The defender currently has two years remaining on his contract at the Camp Nou.
Football Insider verdict
Everton boss Koeman shouldn’t feel too disheartened with Barcelona’s unwillingness to sell Vermaelen this summer. The Belgian would have been a fine addition to the squad because he would have been the perfect player to pass on his experience at the top level to summer signing Michael Keane. However, Vermaelen has always suffered with injuries throughout his career and Everton have also produced some impressive defensive displays at the start of the new campaign which indicates that they don’t necessarily need to add in this area. Koeman might try and test Barcelona’s resolve in January but he should be delighted with the current crop of defenders currently in the squad.
