Everton have sounded out the possibility of signing Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro, according to a report.
The Mirror claims that Gameiro, 30, is worried about dropping down the pecking order with the La Liga giants when Diego Costa arrives in January, meaning that the Toffees could make a move for the £20million-rated forward when the transfer window re-opens.
Everton are in desperate need of a goalscorer after a poor start the season in which Sandro Ramirez is yet to find the back of the net on Merseyside after signing from Malaga in the summer.
Gameiro could certainly be the man to fill the void left by Romelu Lukaku, having been prolific in front of goal at Atletico since signing from Sevilla for £35million last summer.
Throughout his career, Gameiro has been in top goalscoring form whether it be with Lorient, Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla or Diego Simeone’s Atletico.
He scored 16 goals in 46 appearances last term across all competitions, although a lot of that game time came from the bench.
It is understood that the Madrid side may be tempted to loan the France international out in the winter transfer window or see that he leaves for good at the tune of £20million.
Football Insider Verdict
Everton have tried and failed with a number of striker targets but Gameiro looks like one that may be achievable with Costa on his way to Atletico Madrid. £20million is a good fee for a striker who has proved himself to be a regular goalscorer in his career with some top clubs and he could definitely start over someone like Sandro. Although the Spaniard is yet to score, he needs more time to settle in because Everton have had some very hard fixtures as of late. It is expected for him not to score against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United, but Gameiro could be the striker who can find the net against top sides.
