Pickford will be 'delighted' amid 'outstanding' Everton transfer news - pundit

Jordan Pickford will be “delighted” that Everton have signed an “outstanding” backup goalkeeper in Asmir Begovic.

So says former top-flight right-back Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Everton confirmed the news on 20th July.

The 34-year-old Bosnian shot-stopper signed a 12-month contract and told Everton’s website that he was “really excited” to get going.

Pickford featured 31 times for the Toffees in the league last season, with on-loan Robin Olsen taking the gloves for the remaining seven matches.

Hutton claims that Begovic is an “ideal” insurance option and will push Pickford to keep his standards high.

“He’ll be an outstanding backup,” he told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.

“He’s got all the experience and he’s a seasoned professional. They had Olsen last year and he’s left so they obviously needed to bring someone in.

“He’s not going to challenge for the number one spot, and he’ll know that.

“But when you’ve got that person to come in who is reliable, a safe pair of hands, you know what you’re getting from him.

“He’s got all the experience and that’s the type of goalkeeper you need within your squad.

“He’ll probably help and motivate Pickford to get the best out of him too, so I think he’ll be delighted. It looks like an ideal move.

Begovic featured 45 times for Bournemouth in the Championship last term before leaving as a free agent.

As well as with the Cherries, Begovic has Premier League experience with Portsmouth, Stoke City and Chelsea.
