Everton may be about to replace Charly Alacaraz with Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney in the upcoming transfer window.

The former Flamengo star has failed to establish himself at the Toffees after a promising loan spell and could potentially be on his way out soon.

David Moyes clearly needs midfield reinforcements at the Blues and the Championship Player of the Year will undoubtedly strengthen their squad.

Hackney does his best when given free rein to roam in the engine room, which will surely only make life difficult for Alcaraz in terms of securing minutes in the 2026-27 campaign.

It feels like the 23-year-old Argentine ace's days at Hill Dickinson Stadium are numbered, with an offer for the English midfielder arguably imminent at the Merseyside outfit.

Everton take steps to secure Hayden Hackney transfer

According to David Ornstein on 5 June, the Toffees are in contact with Middlesbrough over a move for Hackney.

The news outlet reports that the 23-year-old prefers a move to Hill Dickinson Stadium despite interest from the likes of Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

It has been claimed that Boro aren't afraid to let the England Under-21 international enter the final year of his contract if they don't receive a suitable offer.

Hackney's versatility was evident in the 2025-26 campaign as he played in multiple positions in the middle of the park, scoring five goals and providing eight assists in 38 Championship appearances.

Harrison Armstrong left with Hill Dickinson Stadium regret

Speaking to Football Insider, former Everton executive Keith Wyness said in January that contacts at the club have backed Harrison Armstrong to be their next big star at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

While the 19-year-old showed fine form initially after his loan spell at Preston North End was cut short, Moyes has been reluctant to give him minutes in recent months.

The young Englishman will undoubtedly be looking for another temporary exit in the summer window to further his development.

Hackney's potential move to the Merseyside outfit will only make things more difficult for Armstrong in L3 and he should demand consistency from the powers that be to ensure he isn't left in the same predicament again.
