David Moyes ally blasts 'stupid question' amid Everton fans unrest
Everton manager David Moyes was realistic when he answered a question about the chance of success in the domestic cups this season.
That is the opinion of former senior Everton scout and Moyes ally, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
The 63-year-old was asked about how important the cups will be for the Toffees this season and made it clear that staying in the Premier League is the bigger priority.
Some Everton fans have been left angered by Moyes' comments, which have done little to inspire confidence for the new season.
The last trophy to be won by the blue side of Merseyside came more than 30 years ago, and seeing the likes of Newcastle United and Crystal Palace end their own trophy droughts has prompted fans to demand their own success.
Everton will play Wolves in the next round of the Carabao Cup after progressing on Wednesday, with Thierno Barry's hat-trick the highlight of a 4-0 win over Preston North End.
David Moyes' first priority is to 'guarantee £260m income'
There is little doubt that Moyes' return has aided Everton significantly, but there was disappointment over the way last season ended.
The Toffees may well have been on for European qualification before they dropped off completely at the end of the campaign, ultimately finishing where they had in the 2024-25 season - 13th.
Moyes often faces the criticism of being too cautious in his football, and many fans thought his hesitancy to demand success of his players publicly was similarly disappointing.
"I thought that was a stupid question, to be honest. Of course he wants to win a cup. Every manager wants to win a cup," King told Football Insider.
"Certainly every manager don't want to get relegated. But then you build your team to try and accommodate the Premier League, and that's what he does. He's realistic, he isn't going to win the Premiership.
"So the first thing you have to guarantee is that income every season of over £260million. That's your first job. Then the second one, of course, is if you're in a competition, you want to win it, no matter who you are.
"We've seen through the history of the cup events that there's always some team that has a little turn up. I was at Everton when they got to the cup final. You know, unlucky, lose to Chelsea."
"It's not a controversial answer, he gave. It was a realistic answer to what I thought was a silly question. You can't argue with the work he's done," he added.
Frustration with Moyes growing
Among the Everton fans, there is a growing sense that Moyes can only take the club so far.
While there is an appreciation for all he has done for the Toffees, there is a real hunger for success that many believe the Scot cannot deliver.
It is unclear whether such a feeling exists at the board level, however, but improvement will certainly be demanded this season.
It is no longer good enough for Moyes to just avoid relegation with Everton, he must now take the next step and push to end the drought.
