Everton have produced another James Garner - 'he's starting to look a player'

Harrison Armstrong could well be in the England squad within the coming years after his emergence for Everton.

That is the opinion of former senior Everton scout, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.

The 19-year-old has emerged as a key player for David Moyes this season, playing nearly every minute of the Toffees' unbeaten start in the Premier League.

Armstrong came close to leaving Everton in the summer, with Nottingham Forest having been in advanced talks over a deal worth £40million.

But the owners, The Friedkin Group, eventually pulled the plug on the deal, with fans making their feelings clear in the away end at Bournemouth just hours after the news had emerged.

Everton look to be profiting from that decision, with Armstrong already being dubbed as a future England midfielder.

With James Garner receiving his call-up in recent days, it is not out of the question that Everton's midfield duo could well one day be England's.

The pair go together extremely well, and Moyes will hope to keep them together for many years to come.

"I think you've got a situation with him very similar to the boy James Garner," King told Football Insider. "He's only 19 now, Armstrong, he's certainly got potential.

"He's been out on loan to Preston and I think he's been to Derby. And it seems to have been a good pathway for him because at both those clubs he was playing games. 

"He'd probably have been on the bench during that time for Everton. So it was wise to get him out on loan in a decent standard of football, which is the Championship. He's come back in and he's starting to look a player. 

"If he continues the way he's going, he'll probably get a chance with the England squad. The same way the boy James Garner did. Similar type. He's a good size, strong. The more games he plays, his potential will grow."

Steven Gerrard view on Armstrong telling

Steven Gerrard played for the other side of Merseyside and is not a popular man at Everton, but he is undoubtedly one of England's best ever midfielders and was capped 114 times.

"First and foremost, if you're David Moyes you're not happy about that," he said in August when news of a bid for Armstrong emerged. "And if you're an Everton supporter you're not happy about that, because this kid has got such a bright future.

"I've watched him quite a bit - he's a lovely mover, a lovely athlete. I still think he can improve, of course you can at that age.

"It'd be a huge loss for Everton and a fantastic player for Nottingham Forest because this kid is England potential for sure."
