'The club will be gone before the summer' – Keith Wyness drops Everton bombshell
The Friedkin Group have no intention of continuing to fund Everton beyond the end of the current campaign.
That is according to former Toffees chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that supporters should not expect a busy January transfer window.
TFG have now officially put the club up for sale, but have made it clear that they will continue to fund the club until a suitable buyer is found.
However, Wyness believes that they will have already settled on a cut-off of next summer for that plan, and will start to pull funding away if the club isn’t sold by then.
The Americans have already faced significant pressure from fans due to a perceived lack of spending in recent transfer windows, and the situation could yet get worse.
With the takeover process now in motion, TFG are keen to ensure that a deal is done as quickly as possible.
TFG’s 'maintenance' funding to bring ‘problems’
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Friedkins will revert to merely funding the club at “maintenance level” if a takeover isn’t done before next summer.
The Scottish businessman feels that “problems” will inevitably arise if the situation reaches that stage, with fans already frustrated with the owners.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained how TFG will approach the sustained funding.
“They'll support it properly in January, and they'll certainly do something there. Nothing spectacular, but I think they'll do something there and that will keep the process moving,” he said.
“If it gets into next summer, then yes, they're going to start thinking, okay, we'll keep it on maintenance level, which is not going to satisfy anybody. And that's when the problems will start.
“And that's why I think they've started this process early, because I think they want to get this done before next summer. I expect the club will be gone before the summer.”
David Moyes already pushing for January signing
Football Insider revealed on Monday that David Moyes is already pushing for Everton to sign a new left-back once the January window opens.
The Merseysiders opted to loan out youngster Adam Aznou to Malaga in the summer, but are now viewing that decision as a “mistake.”
Vitaliy Mykolenko is now sidelined through injury, and with no other senior left-back in the squad, Moyes is desperate for a new face to come in.
However, with the owners looking to pull away from the club, the boss may potentially have issues when it comes to getting what he wants in the upcoming transfer window.
