Everton have reignited their interest in Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence, but reaction to the news has been mixed.

The 25-year-old is currently away with England at the 2026 World Cup, though he has only started two out of the five games so far.

Just like everyone at Hotspur Way, Spence had a rather difficult 2025-26 campaign, but it clearly made him stronger, being picked by Thomas Tuchel for this summer's tournament.

He primarily played at left-back last term, but with Andy Robertson joining on a free transfer, his game time could be limited further in 2026-27.

Everton have been most heavily linked with a move for the 25-year-old [The Athletic], with Juventus also named in the race for his signature.

If anyone at the Hill Dickinson Stadium was cautious about agreeing a deal, Ian Wright's old quotes might be enough to bring them around this summer.

Djed Spence can bring 'swashbuckling' displays to Everton

The Arsenal legend spoke about the full-back all the way back in 2022, following the Gunners' clash with Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.

“That was one of the best right back performances I have seen for a very long time. A very long time,” he said on Wrighty's House Podcast.

“If we are talking about right-backs performing at an unbelievable level, we’re talking Reece James and Trent [Alexander-Arnold].

“But I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time.”

Of course, it has been a few years since that game, but Spence is more than talented enough to step up in a big way for the Toffees next season.

The 2026 World Cup has been the perfect reminder of what he's capable, especially on the biggest stage of them all, and why the Toffees need to take a chance on him.

How Tottenham defender made England history

Spence has done extremely well to turn his career around, having gone from loan spells asat Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa, to featuring for the Three Lions.

In fact, when making his international debut back in August 2025, he became the first Muslim player capped by the England national team.

This was a huge moment in the nation's history, likely opening the door for more young footballers to be proud about their religion and background.

Football should be a totally diverse and all-inclusive sport, much like anything else, and hopefully this is just the start on the international stage.
