Idrissa Gana Gueye featured on Tuesday as Senegal were beaten 3-1 by France in their World Cup opener amid the backdrop of his uncertain Everton future.

He featured almost throughout, as Kylian Mbappe's brace and Bradley Barcola's goal sank Pape Thiaw's side, despite Ibrahim Mbaye's consolation.

The 36-year-old will leave Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer if a new contract is not agreed, with negotiations ongoing.

Gueye made 25 Premier League appearances last season and was among David Moyes' first options whenever he was fit.

However, there is an argument that the veteran is blocking the way for younger players, who will play a part in Everton's future.

The likes of Harrison Armstrong will be closer to the starting line-up if Gueye is let go this summer, although the 19-year-old is unlikely to be ready for 25 Premier League starts yet.

Everton shown correct Idrissa Gana Gueye decision

Everton may be slightly more agreeable in contract negotiations with Gueye after his display on Tuesday.

Up against the energetic French midfield of Aurelien Tchouameni, Adrien Rabiot and Michael Olise, the 36-year-old held his own.

Senegal competed in the first half and were arguably the better team, with Nicolas Jackson going extremely close to putting them ahead when he hit the post.

Gueye was dominant in the midfield alongside Lamine Camara and Pape Gueye, and it looked as if the AFCON final winners could secure a famous victory.

The second half was a different story, however, and Olise quickly began to find space in between the lines, to devastating effect.

Gueye misplaced just five of his passes in his 88 minutes on the pitch, completing five into the final third.

He completed two successful tackles and recorded six recoveries, winning two duels from the three he contested.

While not a vintage performance, it was one that will surely leave Everton convinced of Gueye's ability to continue at the highest level.

Iliman Ndiaye sparks impact from bench

Everton also had Iliman Ndiaye in action for Senegal, but the forward was forced to appear from the bench.

Instantly after coming on, the 26-year-old got involved and provided the assist for Mbaye's goal.

There is also uncertainty surrounding Ndiaye's future this summer, amid recent comments that suggest that he would be open to an exit.

The former Sheffield United player has not shown any willingness to sign a new contract, but with his set to expire in 2029, there is slightly less immediate pressure on the Toffees.
