Everton will be furious with Premier League announcement ahead of Tottenham clash

Everton and David Moyes will be furious that Darren England has been appointed as the referee for their clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Toffees are no doubt under serious pressure to get a result in North London against a struggling Spurs side.

Optimism is at an all-time low among the fanbase after a diabolical end to the transfer window.

On top of this, Everton have failed to win their last two matches in the Premier League and are now at risk of slipping down the table before the three-week international break.

Therefore, Moyes will have hoped for a positive referee appointment for the Tottenham game.

However, England has been riddled with many controversies when officiating Everton matches, including last season’s Merseyside derby.

Darren England is an unpopular figure at Everton 

Last September, England took charge of the Merseyside derby match at Anfield.

The game ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Toffees, with the Premier League tie filled with controversial decisions.

Most notably, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was booked for taking a quick free-kick late on, which proved to be a key talking point.

On top of this, there were only three minutes added on at the end of the match, which also proved to be controversial.

As a result, both Moyes and Jack Grealish criticised England after the game for his decision-making.

Therefore, in such an important tie, Everton will be furious that he is now back officiating the Tottenham match.

This will be the second time he has taken charge of a Toffees game since the Merseyside derby defeat, having also been the main official for their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in February.

Everton must prove their worth vs Tottenham

In their last two fixtures, Everton have had to rescue a point in the dying minutes.

Against a struggling Spurs side, fans will no doubt expect a victory, especially when you consider that the hosts are yet to score in the Premier League.

Three points could give the Toffees the boost they need to beat Wolves in the Carabao Cup next week as well as Ipswich Town before the international break.

However, it remains to be seen if Everton are able to pick up three points on Saturday.
