Wrexham are joining Coventry City in the race for Everton goalkeeper Mark Travers this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Sources revealed last week that the Sky Blues were ready to activate a release clause, thought to be worth around £4million, in the goalkeeper's contract, but a deal is yet to come to fruition.

Frank Lampard's side are keen to reunite with prime target Carl Rushworth after he spent the season on loan, but they are yet to strike an agreement with Brighton.

Travers is keen to leave Everton this summer in search of more playing time, after making just two appearances across all competitions in his first season since joining from Bournemouth.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson dropped first-choice Arthur Okonkwo at the end of the season in favour of Danny Ward, prompting some doubt over his future.

Both goalkeepers have just one year remaining on their contracts at the Racecourse Ground and will face talks over their futures.

Mark Travers keen to challenge for international spot

Travers has never been the first choice for the Republic of Ireland, and he will struggle to ever be amid the development of Caoimhin Kelleher.

The 27-year-old will not ever have the chance if he does not play regularly, however, and that is likely the motivation behind his desire to leave this summer.

Travers arrived at Hill Dickinson Stadium last summer in the hopes of a fresh start after being displaced at Bournemouth.

But what he found was a permanent position on the bench behind Jordan Pickford, who was even selected for the FA Cup game in January.

If Travers is to have any hope of challenging for the Ireland number one shirt, regular football is a must, even if it is the Championship.

Arthur Okonkwo edges towards Wrexham exit

Travers' potential arrival at Wrexham may well be directly linked to the situation surrounding Okonkwo.

The 24-year-old is of interest throughout the pyramid, and made his first impression at international level by keeping consecutive clean sheets in his first two games for Nigeria.

It was thought that Okonkwo could be Wrexham's number one for a long time, but a contract extension does not appear to be imminent.

Should he leave, the Arsenal goalkeeper will be viewed as a significant loss for Parkinson's team.
