'The amazing thing about Jordan Pickford' - Expert lambasts Everton star after England latest
Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is a beneficiary of poor goalkeeping standards in the country.
That is the opinion of former senior Everton scout and Millwall goalkeeper, Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
The England goalkeeper has attracted some criticism at the World Cup in recent weeks, having allowed goals against Croatia and DR Congo that he would not have been happy with conceding.
Against Mexico on Monday, however, Pickford was incredible as Thomas Tuchel's side held on to a 3-2 win with 10 men to reach the quarter-final.
The 32-year-old punched ball after ball away to keep the pressure off his defenders and keep the Three Lions in the lead, making three saves in total.
Pickford's position for England has often been called into question, but his display on Monday sent a statement to any remaining doubters.
Bryan King shares verdict on Jordan Pickford
With his display on Monday, Pickford became England's joint-highest appearance maker in World Cup history, drawing level with Peter Shilton.
Barring injury, the Everton man will break the record when the Three Lions take to the field against Norway on Saturday for the quarter-final.
Not everybody is convinced by the former Sunderland stopper, however. King received one cap for England and made 380 appearances for Millwall over the course of his career.
"The thing with Pickford is the amazing thing is he's got nearly 90 caps for England, which shows for me, the depth in goalkeeping quality in England is low," he told Football Insider.
"Because if he's good enough to get 90 caps, who else is there? Dean Henderson? [James] Trafford? [Nick] Pope? I think the standard of English goalkeeping is poor. A, because the type of coaching that they're getting.
"And B, it's because there's too many foreign goalkeepers and younger English goalkeepers are not getting chances.
"In my day, Jordan Pickford in the end of the 60s, 70s, beginning of the 80s, Jordan Pickford wouldn't have got a game for England. Not a game," King added.
"But today, he's the best that's there. So that's what we've got and that's what Jordan Pickford is."
Pickford could be set for even more history
Pickford is set to equal Bryan Robson's 90 caps when he takes the field on Saturday, putting him joint-12th in the all-time list for England.
And with three years remaining on his Everton contract, the goalkeeper is aiming for another Shilton record.
The former Leicester City goalkeeper is the all-time record holder for England appearances, with 125 caps.
It would be no surprise at all to see Pickford claim that record before he retires, and he could even extend it by some way.
Harry Kane is 119 and will get their first, however, and will set the goalkeeper a new target before his own international career comes to an end.
