Merlin Rohl hands Everton ideal transfer solution - verdict

Merlin Rohl may have just provided Everton with the solution to their long-standing right-back woes.

The right side of the defence has been a problem position for the Toffees throughout the last 12 months, and David Moyes has been forced to try out several makeshift solutions.

Jake O'Brien operated in the role for large parts of last season, but lacks the technical ability to pose the attacking threat that is expected of a full-back in today's game.

The position has been a top priority for the recruitment team this summer, but the Merseysiders are still struggling to get their hands on a natural fit.

Everton have been heavily linked with a move for Tottenham star Djed Spence in recent weeks, but it remains to be seen whether a deal will be financially viable for them.

Nathan Patterson remains the only natural right-back in the senior squad, but he is strongly expected to move elsewhere before the season starts.

Merlin Rohl could be Everton's saviour

Everton have seen several right-back targets come and go in recent transfer windows, including the likes of Brooke Norton-Cuffy back in January.

Their struggles to bring in a new face in that position have placed greater emphasis on Moyes finding a solution from within.

The boss has tried several different options in that position of late, but perhaps none have fit the bill quite as well as Rohl.

The German operates as a right wing-back in Saturday's goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers, and caught the eye on the right of the back five.

Rohl possesses the perfect engine for the role, and having predominantly played in central midfield during his time in the Bundesliga, is technically proficient enough to pose an attacking threat.

It remains to be seen whether Moyes views a move to a back five as a genuine option long-term, but if he does, then Rohl's displays may totally negate the need for a new addition.

Everton to take 'next step forward' in Rico Lewis chase

Former Everton scout Bryan King has urged Everton take the "next step forward" in their pursuit of Manchester City starlet Rico Lewis.

The ex-recruitment man told Football Insider that a switch to the Hill Dickinson Stadium would be a "good move" for the 21-year-old.

Lewis started just four Premier League games for City last term, and is being linked with the likes of Everton and Nottingham Forest this summer.

Primarily a right-back by trade, the England international can also play at the base of the midfield.
