Ex-Celtic star shares 'oh my god' Daizen Maeda verdict after 'amazing' thing he's seen

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie was blown away by Daizen Maeda's performance for Celtic against Rangers.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the Japan striker's constant running.

Maeda, 24, won many plaudits for his performance as Celtic beat Rangers 2-1 on Sunday (3 April).

He was relentless in his pressing, constantly causing problems for the Rangers defence when they had possession.

This trait caught McAvennie's eye and left him impressed.

"Maeda, my god, what a shift he put in the other day," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"He covered so much ground at the weekend, he does every week, he looked knackered.

"I'm delighted for the boy because he's got a few goals but oh my god, the way he runs, amazing.

"Ange knew he was getting that when he signed this lad and it's something you don't see too much of.

"It doesn't matter the game or the opposition, he will run himself into the ground.

"Then he will go and do exactly the same a few days later, it's great to watch.

"I just hope he can add a few more goals to his game because that's the stat most people acre about these days."

Since moving to Celtic in January, Maeda has scored six goals in 15 games, including one on his debut.

He joined from Yokohama F. Marinos and was one fo three recruits from the country over the winter.
