Ex-Fifa official issues 'next level' Celtic claim as controversial Reo Hatate footage analysed

St Mirren can have no complaints with the penalty Celtic were awarded in the 7-0 hammering on Saturday (9 April), according to Keith Hackett.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed Scottish referees are “next level” compared to their English colleagues.

As shown on the BBC’s Sportscene programme, Andrew Dallas awarded a penalty when Tom Sang brought down Reo Hatate just inside the penalty area.

Josip Juranovic converted from the spot to score Celtic’s fourth goal before they added another three goals to round off a productive afternoon at Parkhead.

“The referee is in a great position,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I think it’s a careless challenge. With the referee in a good position he’s made a sound judgement.

“He’s looking a little bit down the channel so maybe he could have gone a bit wider to get an angle on it.

“It’s a confident decision and a good bit of refereeing, absolutely.

“Do these Scottish referees make mistakes? They seem to be next level at the moment compared to English referees.

“There are loads of moans and groans but I would suggest to the Scottish FA that they don’t need VAR. These guys are good enough.

“It will be interesting to see how VAR changes the dynamic.”

Hatate, Giorgos Giakoumakis, Daizen Maeda, Matt O’Riley and Liel Abada were the other scorers against St Johnstone.

The weekend’s results leave the Hoops six points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership and they have a better goal advantage of 19 over Rangers.

In other news, Celtic have been told to brace themselves for Premier League offers for a key man.
