Newcastle United chiefs have every right to question why Tony Harrington is refereeing their game with Crystal Palace on Wednesday night (20 April).

That is the view of ex-Fifa and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider as Harrington is set to take charge of only his second Premier League game of the season.

The Hartlepool official was promoted to the Premier League list at the beginning of the season but has had his opportunities limited.

His only other top-flight game this term was Wolves' 1-0 win over Brighton back in December.

"If you're going to take a referee and promote him at the beginning of the season with all the bells and whistles, the salary and then only use him once, I think that's totally unfair," Hackett told Football Insider's Connor Whitley.

"He's not injured because he's been doing Championship games. It's almost like a new season for him.

"It's not an easy game because there are no easy games in the Premier League and I hope it goes well for him. I think his bosses have not treated him fairly.

"The teams are going to look around and say 'Who is this guy?' Newcastle are probably saying behind-the-scenes 'Why have we got a new starter at this stage in the season?'

"Ultimately, we have to question why this is his second game of the season? It's a reflection of the PGMOL.

"You can't judge a referee by one game. If he's on the list, aim to give these guys appointments. He's come through the process and met the criteria.

"I hope the game goes well for him. Newcastle are on a roll so the atmosphere will be terrific and I have no questions over his ability to cope with it.

"It's just to the technical staff, players and everyone else he's an unknown guy so will need to win their respect."
