Ex-Fifa referee: Players are going to get hurt as controversial Ronaldo footage emerges from Man United
Keith Hackett has warned players will get hurt if assistant referees continue to delay flagging offsides like they did with Cristiano Ronaldo as Man United held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted the assistant made a “clear error” by allowing Ronaldo to run at goal when he was “miles offside”.
He broke down the left-hand side late on and won a corner kick despite bing clearly offside when he was played the ball in an incident missed by the BBC’s Match of the Day 2 programme.
As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, Thomas Tuchel claimed it was a “terrible decision” after he was shown a yellow card for protesting the incident.
“The Ronaldo one was a clear error by the assistant referee, Ronaldo was well offside,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“As he is heading for the goal that was not the point for the delayed flag. I think the flag should have gone up.

“That offside was not even looked at by the VAR, what were they were doing?
“A corner kick was awarded and if that had gone in that would have really upset the apple cart.
“While I understand why the delayed flag is used I just think we’ve got to take care. There is this enhanced risk when the goalkeeper is coming out and the forward is in an attacking mode we’re going to get that clash that will injure players.
“Ultimately at the end of the day, Anthony Taylor does not want that on his shift. He wants his guys to do their job. This was simple, it was miles offside so I don’t know why the assistant at the elite level missed it.
“You could even see it in the body language of Ronaldo, he knew it was offside. That’s one for review.”
