Ex-manager hails West Ham after 'brilliant' update on bid to lure Phillips from Liverpool
Alex McLeish has insisted Liverpool Nathaniel Phillips would be a “great” signing for West Ham in January.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 24-year-old deserves a regular starting role in the Premier League after breaking through at Anfield.
A West Ham source has told Football Insider (29 November) the Irons are laying the groundwork for a move for Phillips after Angelo Ogbonna’s season-ending injury blow.
It is understood Liverpool would listen to offers around the £12million mark for Phillips.
McLeish admitted he had been blown away by West Ham’s recruitment and insisted Phillips could be another “excellent” signing.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I thought he did a really sound job going in last year under difficult circumstances.

“You could see in his movement and in his talking to teammates that he’s been schooled in a really strong way.
“You would expect him to be able to go to another club and make a regular slot for himself.
“On paper, it looks like a great move. He’s young, he’s got legs. Craig Dawson is in the older level but he’s still proved to be a really good signing by David Moyes.
“One thing that West Ham have done extremely well in the last 12 months or so, maybe even more, is recruitment. It has been excellent.
“In the last two years, they’ve recruited the Czech Republic guys, brought in Craig Dawson. Now they’re looking to bring in a younger player who’s been schooled in a brilliant way.”
Phillips played 20 times for Liverpool last season with more senior stars ruled out.
However, he has made just three appearances this term.
