Ex-manager issues Calvert-Lewin transfer claim Everton fans will hate

Alex McLeish has claimed Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin would struggle to turn down the chance to join Real Madrid.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager insisted the Spanish giants would be a lure for any player, regardless of their current club.

Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato claim former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti is keen on reuniting with the 24-year-old in the Spanish capital.

Ancelotti left Goodison Park to return to the Bernabeu earlier this year.

The hitman was a firm favourite under the Italian, missing just seven of a possible 67 games.

McLeish admitted Everton fans would hate to see the striker leave Goodison Park.

However, he insisted the lure of Real Madrid may be too much for the England international to resist.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Everton fans will be saying: ‘He can’t leave us because we’re the best.’

“But when you think about it and you’re getting a call from Real Madrid or Barcelona…

“It’s not all rosy these days over there, losing the amount of revenue that normally you take for granted.

“But there’s still a magnificent lure for any footballer in the world to be saying: ‘Well, I’ve got a chance to go to Real Madrid.’

“You may leave Everton, you may leave Aberdeen. I’m sure a lot of the clubs are huge in the fans’ eyes but Real Madrid is quite something.”

Calvert-Lewin is currently out of action with a quad injury and faces several more weeks out after a setback.

The striker scored 29 times in his 60 appearances under Ancelotti.

He netted three in three games before being sidelined.
