Ex-manager: Leeds may be secretly pleased about shattering Rodrigo news

Leeds United may be secretly pleased Rodrigo has not been called up to the Spain squad for the Euros, according to Alex McLeish.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Whites will want to focus on the 30-year-old’s fitness after a disruptive season.

While Leeds teammate Diego Llorente was named among Luis Enrique’s squad for the Euros, Rodrigo has been left out.

The 25-cap attacker also missed out on the squad in both March and November.

His last international appearance came in a 1-0 defeat to Ukraine in October 2020.

McLeish suggested Leeds would be happy knowing he can get a full pre-season under his belt rather than sitting on the bench for Spain.

McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “It’s a disappointment for the player.

“At the same time, the club, I think, will be satisfied he’s going to get some rest. It can always come again for him, the national team.

“Certainly, he’s struggled with injuries. If they don’t get him right for the start of next season and he comes back from international duty maybe half not playing in the Spanish setup…

“Luis Enrique has named 24 players instead of the eligible 26. I can kind of see why he’s done that. He might be thinking things may become tricky. You can see by him leaving him out the squad, he wasn’t intending to play him anyway.

“Rodrigo has got time on his side.”

Leeds’ record signing, Rodrigo made 28 appearances during his first season at Elland Road.

However, injury and fitness problems caused him to miss a large chunk of games between February and May.

In other news, a pundit has suggested the real reason Leeds United have pulled plug on attacker deal.
