Ex-manager makes 'amazing' claim after Begovic news at Everton
Alex McLeish has insisted Everton have signed a “safe pair of hands” in Asmir Begovic.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted it was “amazing” how older goalkeepers had developed a “niche” of being backup options.
Everton confirmed last week (July 20th) Begovic had joined from Bournemouth on an initial one-year contract.
The 34-year-old shot-stopper looks set to fill the void of former Toffees loanee Robin Olsen.
The Sweden international joined Everton temporarily from Roma last summer.
With Jordan Pickford expected to continue as the number one at Goodison Park, McLeish insisted Begovic is more than capable backup.

“It’s that strategy of getting a number two who knows his way about the Premier League penalty boxes,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“That’s not from a striker’s perspective, that’s from the perspective of saving it. He knows the game inside out position-wise.
“It’s amazing these older boys are getting this wee niche. It’s become a bit of par for the course over the last 10, 15 years.
“Some goalkeepers have come in and never really even played a game for the two years of a contract or whatever.
“If you’re called upon, you know you’re talking about safe pair of hands coming in.”
Begovic has 252 Premier League appearances under his belt so far.
He played 51 times across all competitions for Bournemouth last season.
The giant shot-stopper kept 15 clean sheets during the regular Championship season to help the Cherries reach the play-offs.
Meanwhile, Pickford played 31 times in the Premier League last term.
