Ex-manager 'really surprised' after twist in late West Ham-Lingard talks

Alex McLeish has admitted he was stunned Jesse Lingard remained at Manchester United amid late-window talks with West Ham.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 28-year-old faces a “sticky few months” at Old Trafford.

As revealed by Football Insider (26th August), West Ham were confident of striking a late deal after holding talks with both Manchester United and Lingard’s camp.

However, the Telegraph reported (August 31st) the Irons were unwilling to meet the Red Devils’ £30million asking price.

The Hammers instead secured the deadline day signing of Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow.

Lingard has just one year left on his contract at Old Trafford.

McLeish admitted he is not sure Lingard has what it takes to get any meaningful game time ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s other options.

“Unless he totally excels in Ole’s eyes, I can’t see him being a fixture in the team,” McLeish told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“It’s a bit like James going to Leeds. He will do what Lingard did, and flourish away from the massive pressure and expectation a club like Man United brings.

“Man United are looking to win the league and challenge in Europe as they did under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“To do that you need the world-class temperament and mentality – and that can be what stifles players.

“Lingard went away and the pressure was off, he played with total freedom at West Ham.

“I’m really surprised Lingard hasn’t moved. It could be a sticky few months ahead without any football action.

“How is he going to get in that team?”

The 28-year-old is part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this month’s World Cup qualifying triple-header.

Lingard has played just four competitive minutes for Manchester United this season.
