Ex-manager tips Nuno to block Winks exit and save Tottenham 'millions'
Alex McLeish has tipped Nuno Espirito Santo to block Harry Winks from quitting Tottenham this summer.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Portuguese boss could save “millions” by playing the 25-year-old.
As reported by the Athletic (July 3rd), Winks has expressed interest in leaving Spurs this summer in pursuit of regular game time at another club.
Winks, 25, fell out of favour under former boss Jose Mourinho and made just nine Premier League starts during the 2020/21 campaign.
However, McLeish suggested Nuno would not want to sell the midfielder thanks to his ability to keep possession.
He also claimed replacing someone like Winks would require a hefty transfer fee.

“There is something special about a holding midfielder. We’ve spoken about Steven Davis and guys like that,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“Harry Winks could do that job as well. Is he the same level as the Portuguese players Nuno had at Wolves? That’s possibly a question mark.
“I would say that I can see Nuno wanting to keep the likes of that type of player. He is a very comfortable player, he does keep the ball, he doesn’t give it away that much. He’s got a terrible habit of keeping possession.
“I like Harry Winks but I guess it depends on the strength of your squad. Getting a Declan Rice in there or something like that, you have to spend millions if you’re looking to change it.
“I guess he won’t get a lot of money to spend in terms of Spurs’ recruitment.
“Jose Mourinho, when he came in he famously said that he’d duck into the academy. He didn’t really, but he also didn’t really spend a lot of money.”
