Ex-manager: Tottenham face backlash after Sky update on Lo Celso and Romero
Alex McLeish has warned Tottenham face a backlash if Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are punished for representing Argentina.
The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the duo would “put up a defence” after playing for their country over the international break.
Sky Sports claims (7th September), Spurs are to fine the duo for joining up with the Argentina squad without permission.
The duo reportedly travelled to South America for games against Venezuela and Brazil against the club’s wishes.
McLeish suggested Tottenham may have adapted their club rules for international players during the pandemic.
However, he warned Lo Celso and Romero may try argue their case against the prospective punishment.

“Club rules are in place. You do have club values,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“There has had to be a change in some of those values. In terms of what has happened over the last couple of years with Covid.
“I can only imagine that there were some conditions put in place for players in terms of Covid-19.
“If Spurs are doing something the players can challenge, that’s what will happen.
“The players will say we never knew or they’ll put up some kind of defence.
“You would think that there would be rules in place within the club.”
Health officials caused the abandonment of Argentina’s game against Brazil after storming the pitch.
The Brazilian government have made accusations against four players for breaching quarantine protocol.
