Ex-manager wowed as Celtic seal 'brilliant' deal for Davis-type signing
Alex McLeish has insisted Celtic have pulled off a “top-class” signing in James McCarthy.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland manager suggested the 30-year-old could offer a similar level of quality and experience as Steven Davis does at Rangers.
As confirmed on Tuesday (August 3rd), McCarthy has joined Celtic on a free transfer after leaving Crystal Palace.
The Glasgow-born midfielder has penned a four-year deal at Parkhead.
McLeish admitted he had kept a close eye on the Republic of Ireland international’s career in England.
He suggested McCarthy’s “fantastic” experience in the Premier League would make him a valuable addition for Celtic.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “McCarthy’s been around, he’s got brilliant Premier League experience in England.
“It’s no mean feat playing for Wigan, Everton and then Crystal Palace. When he first went from Hamilton down south I thought: ‘This will be interesting.’
“He was a revelation. I’m not saying he’s the same type of Davis at Rangers but he’s a similar kind of age, a bit younger.
“As such, you would think he can bring real top-class experience to Celtic.”
McCarthy has played 272 times in the Premier League during his spells with Wigan, Everton and Palace.
He made 35 appearances for the Eagles across all competitions last season but was allowed to leave at the end of his contract.
He already has 37 Scottish Premiership games under his belt after helping Hamilton to promotion in 2008.
McCarthy played a total of 99 times for the Accies before moving to England.
