Ex-Premier League referee demands extended ban as controversial Reo Hatate footage emerges from Celtic
Barry Maguire should have been sent off during Motherwell’s 2-1 loss to Celtic on Sunday (2 October), according to Keith Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted that Maguire endangered the safety of Reo Hatate during the first half at Parkhead.
As shown in the highlights on the SPFL’s YouTube channel Maguire caught Hatate just outside the penalty area with a high boot.
Celtic were awarded a free-kick but John Beaton failed to produce a card for the Motherwell defender.
A red card would have seen him banned for Motherwell’s next three Scottish Premiership games.
“I think this is a red card,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“What you’ve seen is, the kid’s leading with his left foot. It’s high and into his opponent.
“For me, he’s endangered the safety of his opponent and it’s a red card. He should have gone.
“I think the referee is in a good position and has probably got the best angle of this particular offence, in fairness. He doesn’t have the same angle that we have.
“In fairness, he’s only got one view and only sees it as a foul, not a red. That’s fine and I think we have to live with that until Scotland get VAR.
“For me, I think it was minimum reckless and I think he’s lucky not to get a red card.”
Hatate scored the winner at Parkhead with a stunning long-range strike.
The result kept Celtic top of the Scottish Premiership table, two points clear of Rangers in second place.
