Ex-Premier League referee: Liverpool victims of injustice as 'amazing' Virgil van Dijk footage emerges
Napoli should not have been awarded their second penalty as they beat Liverpool 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday (7 September), according to Keith Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee insisted that Victor Osimhen fouled Virgil van Dijk and not the other way around.
As shown on the highlights on BT Sport’s YouTube channel, Osimhen and Van Dijk came together inside the penalty area and the ball fell to Alisson.
The on-field referee waved away Napoli’s appeals for a penalty before reversing his decision after reviewing the footage on the pitchside monitor.
Osimhen’s penalty was saved by Alisson to keep the score at 1-0 but Napoli still went on to win.
“I thought the forward fouled Van Dijk,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s given a penalty kick to Napoli which was amazing. He got it wrong, I don’t think that was a penalty kick at all.
“I think that was a foul by the forward on Van Dijk. Look, he’s got his knee and there’s contact. He’s put a straight leg across.
“He’s not going to go anywhere that forward and he’s overreacted. The referee’s bought it and that’s a poor decision. The player is not even going forward, he’s falling backwards.
“I find it amazing that these so-called top referees don’t look at body mechanics, all they look at is the reaction of the players.
“Sorry, you put your leg across to stop Van Dijk getting the ball and then exaggerated the contact.
“The forward was the first offender so that was a poor penalty kick decision in my opinion.”
