Gabriel Agbonlahor has dismissed reports that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wants to sign Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted Villa Park is the best place for the 25-year-old in a verdict that the club’s fans will love.
The Independent report Pep Guardiola has identified Grealish as his top target to begin his Man City rebuild and even consulted Kevin de Brunye about a potential move.
The Spaniard recently signed a contract extension at the Etihad Stadium and potential signings played a key role in negotiations.
Grealish was linked with a move away in the summer but ended speculation when he penned a new five-year contract with his boyhood club.
Asked by Football Insider whether he could see his former teammate moving to Man City, Agbonlahor said: “You hear about all these comments but Pep Guardiola has not come out and said it to anyone, you’ve not heard Kevin de Brunye say anything.
“For me, people make rumours out of nothing.
“For all we know, it’s just someone making up a rumour so I wouldn’t get too dragged into that.
“Jack Grealish got into the England squad by playing regularly in his favoured position for Aston Villa.
“When you go to Man City you’re not guaranteed to play in your best position.
“Man City have got Raheem Sterling, Ferran Torres, Riyad Mahrez, Kevin de Bruyne, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva. They’ve got so many players that I’m not sure Jack would be playing every week.
“I’m sure Jack will be looking to do his best for Aston Villa and that’s given him the chance to play for England.”
In other Aston Villa news, Premier League giants have been tipped to trigger an “extremely cheap” clause in a Villa player’s contract.
