Alan Hutton claims that Rangers winger Sheyi Ojo has been dazzling Steven Gerrard and the coaching staff on the training ground as the club hold internal talks over a permanent deal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers defender and lifelong fan of the Light Blues says that the 22-year-old has done well in the early stages of his Ibrox career but that it will be his performances behind-the-scenes which will have caught the eye.
As revealed by Football Insider, Rangers’ top brass have held talks among themselves about splashing out on turning the Liverpool loanee’s move to Glasgow into a permanent one, with the expectation he will continue to improve as the season progresses.
Hutton says that such talks can only mean he is impressing not only with his performances on a matchday but with his contribution and dedication on the training pitch, with Gerrard well aware of his abilities from their time at Liverpool together.
Speaking of the behind-the-scenes talks, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think that shows you how well they rate him. If, after eight games, they’re talking along those lines, they obviously see something that’s really there within him.
“Training every day, they’ll see how he is, his attitude, his willingness to work and obviously he ticks those boxes because Gerrard doesn’t seem like the sort of guy that would put up with someone that didn’t.
“If you’re discussing things like that, it can only be a positive. Gerrard would have known him from Liverpool, he’ll know what his attributes are and what he’s capable of. He’s come in, done really well, is really direct and causing full-backs problems.
“Me being a full-back, that’s the one thing that’s difficult, when you’ve got someone with pace that’s very direct, it’s hard to stop, especially when they’re relentless.”
Ojo has played 17 times for the Light Blues across all competitions already this season, with seven of those appearances coming from the club’s opening eight league games of the campaign.
He has 13 first-team outings under his belt for Liverpool, while he has also spent time on loan at Wolves, Fulham and Stade Reims.
