Aston Villa are ready to loan out Frederic Guilbert in January so he can get regular first-team football, Football Insider can reveal.
The Frenchman has not featured in the Premier League this season with Matty Cash and Ahmed Elmohamady in front of him in the pecking order.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider Villa are not planning to sell Guilbert either in January or next summer.
Dean Smith and the Midland giants’ hierarchy want the right-back to return to Villa next season to challenge for a first-team spot.
The 26-year-old rejected a loan move to Championship side AFC Bournemouth in the summer window with the club keen to get him off the wage bill.
He instead decided to stay at Villa Park and fight for his place but has been unable to dislodge £14million summer signing Cash.
Cash has missed just one league game for high-flying Villa this term, with Elmohamady replacing him when he was suspended for the visit of Burnley earlier this month.
Elmohamady turned 33 in September and his contract expires at the end of the season meaning Guilbert could be set to replace him as Cash’s understudy.
However, this campaign he has been limited to just two appearances in the Carabao Cup bringing his total number of appearances in Claret and Blue to 31.
He moved to the club in January 2019 from French side Caen for a £4.4million fee and was immediately loaned back to the Ligue 1 side.
The one-time France Under-21 international established himself as Smith’s first-choice right-back at the beginning of last season when Villa returned to the Premier League.
However, when the Premier League restarted in June, he was limited to just two top-flight appearances.
