Exclusive: Aston Villa bag extra £23m after deals agreed

Aston Villa have cut around £23million from their annual wage bill after several high-profile figures moved on over the summer, sources have told Football Insider. 

Calum Chambers joined Cardiff City on a free transfer despite having a year left on his contract at Villa Park. 

Moussa Diaby, Douglas Luiz, Cameron Archer, Tim Iroegbunam, Morgan Sanson and Viljami Sinisalo were all sold during the summer transfer window, with those deals raking in more than £140million. 

Elsewhere, Alex Moreno, Philippe Coutinho and Leander Dendoncker went out on loan, while Clement Lenglet and Nicolo Zaniolo returned to their parent clubs after Villa decided against signing them permanently. 

Lenglet is understood to have been the highest earner of those players after banking £150,000 a week, with Moussa Diaby raking in £130,000 weekly before making his £50million move to Al-Ittihad. 

Aston Villa have made significant savings after summer deals

Coutinho, who returned to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama on loan, has a deal worth around £125,000 a week at Villa Park. 

Dendoncker, meanwhile, is believed to have netted £90,000 per week before heading to Anderlecht on loan. 

Luiz earned £75,000 a week before joining Juventus in a £42million deal, which saw Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea head in the opposition direction. 

Zaniolo made £60,000 a week during his loan spell, with Chambers raking in £50,000 prior to his switch to Cardiff. 

Sanson banked £48,000 weekly before joining Nice permanently over the summer and Moreno, who headed to Nottingham Forest on loan, has a deal worth £35,000. 

Iroegbunam and Sinisalo both earned less than £5,000 a week prior to their Villa Park exits. 

Villa didn’t make any salary savings from selling Archer to Southampton after an obligation clause meant they had to re-sign him from Sheffield United at the end of last season. 

Sources have told Football Insider the West Midlands giants have saved around £40.1million following their summer departures.

But Unai Emery did strengthen his side with eight new signings, including Archer, having spent more than £150million across the transfer window. 

Amadou Onana is believed to be the highest earner of the summer additions after landing a £140,000-a-week deal following his £50million move from Everton. 

Ian Maatsen is raking in £100,000 per week after joining from Chelsea, with Ross Barkley and Jaden Philogene both on between £40,000-50,000 weekly. 

Fellow new signings Lewis Dobbin, Iling-Junior and Barrenechea have all gone out on loan already, ensuring they haven’t added to Villa’s wage bill for 2024-25.

Sources have told Football Insider the summer additions have added £17.2million to the club’s payroll, meaning they have cut around £22.9million in wages from their annual salary expenditure. 

Emery’s side currently sit ninth in the Premier League table after a recent dip in form, but they are on course to qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds following a strong start to the revamped league phase.
