Aston Villa are in advanced talks to sign Brentford defender Ezri Konsa, Football Insider can reveal.

The Midlands giants are looking to bring in another central defender alongside £26.5million record signing Tyrone Mings and have set their sights on prising Konsa from Dean Smith's old club.

A Villa source has told Football Insider the club have held extensive discussions with Brentford about a deal for the centre-back, 21, and are closing in on an agreement.

The fee for Konsa is set to be in excess of £10million as the Championship outfit prepare to give the green light for him to be sold after one year.

The 21-year-old joined the Bees for around £2.5million from Charlton Athletic last summer when Smith was in charge.

He made a big impression in his debut season, starting 42 league matches among 47 appearances in all competitions.

Brentford have prepared for the exit of one of their prize assets by recruiting Pontus Jansson for £5.5million from Leeds United on Monday and Ethan Pinnock from Barnsley.

Villa have made six new signings this window and are hoping to add Konsa to the squad before they fly out to America for their pre-season tour later this week.
