Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick has agreed a loan move to Reading and is set for a medical at the Madejski Stadium on Monday, Football Insider sources understand.
Reading have moved to bring in the experienced Elphick to try and sort out their defensive problems and stop their slide down the Championship table.
A number of clubs have expressed an interest in Elphick, including late bids to sign him from Leeds and Hull but Reading have moved quickly to grab the former Bournemouth defender.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Elphick opted to move to Reading as he wanted to move closer to the south of England for personal reasons.
Elphick has struggled to hold down a regular place in the Villa side since joining in 2016 from Bournemouth.
He has enjoyed a run in the side in recent weeks due to injuries to John Terry and Chris Samba, but with Terry now back to the fitness Elphick would find himself out of the starting XI again
The recent loan arrival of Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe has also increased competition for places in the Villa side and Steve Bruce is willing let Elphick move on.
Reading boss Jaap Stam feels Elphick’s experience and defensive knowhow will be vital to his side as he looks to steer them clear of a relegation fight at the wrong end of the Championship table.
