Paul Robinson has tipped Aston Villa to sign a goalkeeper this summer as a deal for Nottingham Forest wing-back Matty Cash nears.
The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the 23-year-old would be a ‘top, top signing’ for Dean Smith’s side.
The Claret and Blue last week moved into pole position to sign the highly versatile right-back ahead of Premier League rivals West Ham.
Football Insider revealed on Sunday that Villa were closing in on the signing of the Englishman for a fee in the region of £12million.
Cash‘s 45 appearances for Forrest last season yielded three goals and five assists, an impressive return for a full-back.
When asked by Football Insider if the defender would be a welcome addition at Villa Park, Robinson said: “Villa have to spend wisely.
“Matty Cash is a top, top player and he would be a very good addition for them.
“Dean Smith knows that they will have to be very cautious with their spending. They spent a lot of money on a lot of players last summer and it almost did not pay off for them.
“They have to look at signing a goalkeeper. With Tom Heaton unavailable for the start of the season they only have Nyland because Pepe Reina has gone. That is an area that we are going to see them spend.”
Tom Heaton ruled himself out of the season’s first three fixtures last month as he continues his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
That leaves Orjan Nyland as the only experienced goalkeeper at the club after Pepe Reina, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Villa Park, joined Lazio.
In other Aston Villa news, Paul Robinson has told Football Insider that he was ‘shocked’ by major player update.
