Darren Bent claimed that Rafa Benitez was clearly a better manager than current West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O’Leary, the former England international suggested that Benitez was much more suited to the Hammers than Pellegrini when comparing the two.

It was recently reported that Benitez was eyeing Pellegrini’s job at West Ham as he is hoping to move back to England before the end of 2019.

Bent explained when you compare Pellegrini’s CV with Benitez’s CV then it’s clear that the current Dalian Yifang boss would fare better at the London Stadium especially based on his work with Newcastle United.

When asked about Benitez circling the West Ham job, Bent told Football Insider: “Look at the differences between Benitez and Pellegrini, Benitez has won the Champions League, the Europa with Chelsea, he’s won a lot of competitions.

“He’s been at Real Madrid so he easily could see himself as a high-flying manager and he could have viewed Newcastle as beneath him, but he didn’t.

“He went there and a lot of people questioned how he was going to do and he worked miracles, he didn’t have much of a budget, he had players that weren’t up to the level he was used to, but he was still able to go to Newcastle and do a fantastic job.

“Now on the flip side, Pellegrini won the Premier League with Man City and people questioned him, was it him as a manager or was it the players and budget they had that got them over the line?

“And now we’re seeing that Benitez is clearly a better manager than him as West Ham have better players than Newcastle had when Benitez was in charge, and yet Pellegrini can’t do anything with them.

“So that shows me, take budgets out of it, Benitez would be much more suited to West Ham than Pellegrini would be.”

Pellegrini has found his job being questioned due to the Hammers going on a seven-game run without a win.

West Ham currently sit 16th in the Premier League and are only three points above the relegation zone after 13 games played
