Darren Bent has hailed Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths and suggested it is “very strange” why he does not get the credit he deserves.

The former Aston Villa and England star, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, delivered his verdict on the 29-year-old after his weekend hat-trick.

Griffiths took his tally to nine league goals for the season on Saturday, netting three times against St Mirren in a 5-0 win for the Bhoys.

Bent admits he is baffled that the Scotland international’s efforts have been undervalued by so many, especially after his latest matchwinning display.

Bent told Football Insider: “He’s been absolutely brilliant, to be fair, scoring that hat trick.

“He always used to score goals for them but for whatever reason he doesn’t get the credit he probably feels he deserves. It’s a bit of a strange one – actually it’s a very strange one – but all he can keep doing is do the business.

“It seems he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.”

Griffiths missed the second half of last season as a result of off-field issues, playing just 20 times before taking personal leave from the game.

This season has already seen him feature 31 times for Neil Lennon’s men, with a total of 11 goals and four assists under his belt across all competitions.

In other Celtic news, it can be revealed a 2019 signing is set for crunch talks with Lennon as he looks at a potential Parkhead exit.
