Darren Bent is surprised that Leeds United have not brought in Brentford attacker Said Benrahma to cover veteran playmaker Pablo Hernandez.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former England forward said he expected Leeds to sign the 25-year-old “straight away” following their promotion to the Premier League.
However, Leeds have instead turned their attentions to Udinese playmaker Rodrigo de Paul to take the mantle from Hernandez.
Football Insider revealed last week that Leeds had agreed personal terms with 26-year-old but are yet to agree a fee with Udinese.
The Athletic reported at the beginning of last month that Leeds were admirers of Benrahma but faced tough competition for his signature.
Asked by Football Insider whether Leeds need to bring in cover for Hernandez, Bent said: “I honestly thought Benrahma would have been the one.
“I thought they would’ve got him signed up straight away but they haven’t done that yet, they haven’t managed to do it.
“It’s going to be interesting but I like what Leeds are doing in the transfer market.
“They’re getting one or two players in, they’ll be disappointed they didn’t get Ben White but they’ve signed Koch from Freiburg.
“It’s that Bielsa factor, would they be able to attract these players without him, I’m not sure.”
Benrahma signed for Brentford from Nice in the summer 2018 and has scored 27 goals and provided 24 assists in his 81 Championship games for the club.
Across his five seasons at Nice, the Algerian started just three Ligue 1 games and spent three loan spells away from the club.
In other news, Football Insider can reveal Leeds United have tabled a big money offer after a major update after breakthrough.
