Exclusive: Bent claims Mourinho has made blunder over Tottenham 26-yr-old
Darren Bent has questioned Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho after playing Eric Dier as a centre-back against Wolves and Norwich City.
The former Spurs and England forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 26-year-old lacks the pace required to counter certain attacking threats.
Dier, who also plays as a central midfielder, was put in at the heart of the defence for the club’s last two games, both of which ended in defeat.
The Lilywhites lined up with a back three against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men during their 3-2 loss, reverting to a back four for the FA Cup clash with Norwich.
Highlighting the amount of pace that Wolves possess up front, Bent believes that Mourinho’s decision to play Dier in defence has to be questioned.
Asked if it was a mistake to play Dier as a centre-back, Bent told Football Insider: “A little bit. I think he lacks a lot of pace and sometimes you’ve got to look at who you’re playing against.

“You look at the team Wolves have got; Jimenez, quick; Jota, quick; Traore, quick – they’re playing Dier at the centre-half position where they lack pace anyway.
“You just question that decision.”
Dier has played 23 times across all competitions this season, although he has primarily featured as a defensive midfielder.
Mourinho has the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Japhet Tanganga to call upon at centre-back.
In other Tottenham news, Bent believes there is “definitely an issue” with one Spurs star.
