Kevin Phillips has backed Kemar Roofe to “get well into double figures this season” after the striker scored his first goal for Rangers on his full debut.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that last weekend’s strike against Kilmarnock will be a “huge relief” for the 27-year-old having recently arrived at Ibrox.

Roofe put pen to paper on a four-year deal in Glasgow earlier this month after the Gers agreed a deal with Belgian giants Anderlecht for his signature.

Steven Gerrard hailed the performance of the former Leeds United forward in his post-match press conference and the new signing looks odds-on to start against Hamilton on Saturday.

Roofe’s performance was timely given that Alfredo Morelos was dropped from the weekend’s squad as speculation intensifies over his future at the club.

When asked by Football Insider if he expected the debut strike to be the catalyst for a prolific season in Scotland, Phillips said:

“I expect him to kick on now, he is a player with loads of talent and speaking from personal experience it is always good to get off the mark. No matter what game it is in.

“It will be a huge relief for him. He will kick on now. He is going to get lots of chances at Rangers so I expect him to get well into double figures this season.”

Roofe last reached double figures in the 2018/19 season when he scored 14 goals in 32 Championship appearances for Leeds United.

His 305 career appearances have yielded 97 goals and 50 assists.
