Southampton have made no contact with Everton about signing Tom Davies since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg joined Tottenham in early August, Football Insider can reveal.

The Saints have an interest in the Merseysiders' midfielder and asked about him initially as part of a potential swap for Hojbjerg.

But the Denmark international eventually opted for Tottenham ahead of Everton and that killed a potential exchange deal.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that there has been no contact since between Southampton and Everton about Davies.

Meanwhile, the Saints are among four clubs interested in another central midfielder, Celtic's Olivier Ntcham.

The versatile Frenchman is also wanted by West Brom, Marseille and Lyon ahead of the 5 October cut-off.

All four clubs have made enquiries about what it would take for Celtic to let the former Man City man go.

Southampton are keen to bolster their midfield after losing Hojbjerg to Tottenham last month for a fee of around £15million.

Southampton are not willing to stretch that far and may instead pursue an alternative deal as the window finale edges closer.

Ntcham remains a key man at Celtic, if not a nailed-on starter.

The same cannot be said of Davies, who has slipped down the pecking order at Everton following the summer signings of Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

They have joined Andre Gomez in a new-look midfield for the Toffees' opening two Premier League matches
