Alex Bruce believes that Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has dazzled on the training ground as the club close in on signing him permanently.
The former Leeds and Kilmarnock centre-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says the shot-stopper must be making an impact if Marcelo Bielsa has given the green light over a permanent transfer.
As revealed exclusively by Football Insider, the Whites are in advanced talks over keeping the 20-year-old at Elland Road after informing Lorient of their intentions to trigger his £5million purchase clause.
This site has since revealed that the teenager is keen to remain at Elland Road past the end of the current campaign.
Bruce says that a manager like Bielsa will see Meslier on a daily basis in training and that he must be doing something right.
Asked if he thought transfer talks meant Meslier had impressed behind closed doors, Bruce told Football Insider: “Yeah, of course. You get an opportunity every day in training.
“When you have a manager who’s really hands on on the training pitch, as Bielsa apparently is, obviously he’s going to see what’s what.
“Obviously he’s done well, he’s popular round the place so I’m sure they’ll be looking to tie him down if he does well.”
Meslier has just three appearances under his belt since joining on loan last summer, his debut coming in the FA Cup defeat to Arsenal.
He has started the last two Championship games in place of the suspended Kiko Casilla, keeping a clean sheet in both.
In other Leeds United news, Bent has suggested that some senior stars may be “coasting” after the training ground lockdown.
