Alex Bruce has hailed four Sheffield United players as “unbelievable” and pivotal to the team’s remarkable Premier League campaign.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the just-retired former defender, 35, named midfield pair John Fleck and John Lundstram and defensive duo Jack O’Connell and Chris Basham as the star quartet in Chris Wilder’s side.

United have performed above all expectations to be placed seventh in the Premier League with a quarter of the season remaining.

Asked by Football Insider: who has been the star performer in Wilder’s side this season, Bruce instead highlighted four players who have really caught his eye.

“It’s difficult to name one because they’ve all done so well,” he said. “I think Fleck’s done very, very well, Lundstram’s been brilliant for them, O’Connell and Basham.

“They’re the four players who’ve been with Chris for such a long period of time now, they’re the nucleus of the team and they’ve been fantastic.

“They’re well drilled, sometimes by keeping a core of players, and fair play to
Chris for doing that and sticking by the players that he’s got, it would have been easy with the money of the Premier League to go and improve the team and chop and change.

“They’ve grown together, improved together, they all know their jobs and they’ve been unbelievable.”

The Blades have lost just seven times in the league this season and have the second best defensive record in the division.

Only runaway leaders Liverpool have let in less than the 25 goals Wilder’s side have conceded from their 27 matches to date.

In other Sheffield United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are set to offer midfielder deal amid £25million interest.
