Alex Bruce has backed Leeds United to hand Gaetano Berardi a new contract at Elland Road if the club are promoted this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds defender has lauded the Swiss enforcer for his tenacity and passion when playing for the Whites.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay reports that both the club and manager Marcelo Bielsa want the 31-year-old to stay at Elland Road for next season, with his current deal set to expire this summer.

Bruce believes keeping Berardi would be a smart decision for Leeds, insisting he has the character needed should the club be battling for survival in the top flight.

Bruce told Football Insider: “He’s a good player. He’s a little bit erratic at times and makes the odd mistake but by god, he wears his heart on his sleeve and gives his all for the club.

“Whenever I’ve seen him he’s always impressed me, he’s a tenacious player and I’m sure he’s someone, if they’re going to have a fight on their hands next season to stay in the Premier League, he’s the kind of character they’d want around the camp.”

Berardi, who joined Leeds from Sampdoria back in 2014, has played a total of 150 times for the Whites across all competitions.

He has proven a versatile option for Bielsa this season, operating at right-back, centre-back and defensive midfield in his 20 appearances.
