Kevin Campbell cannot believe Arsenal have allowed Folarin Balogun to enter the final eight months of his contract.
The former Gunners and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, fears “other clubs will be coveting” the 19-year-old as his current deal runs down.
Balogun scored his first goal for Mikel Arteta’s side last Thursday in what was only his second substitute appearance for the club.
Speaking last week, Arteta revealed that he is desperate for the England Under-20 international to commit his long-term future to the club.
The Athletic‘s David Ornstein claimed that while the club have reopened negotiations with the teenage striker there is still a chance he will leave when his contract expires next summer
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Baolgun’s future at the Emirates, Campbell said:
“It is very important if the club want to keep him but do the club want to keep him? If so you have to do the business and tie him down.
“I cannot believe that he has even got to the final year of his contract. It is a bad position for the club to be in because other clubs will be coveting the young man.
“He is a very talented young man. If Arsenal are serious they will tie him down to a new deal.”
When quizzed over Balogun’s future, Arteta, as quoted by the Evening Standard, said: “He is a player that I want to stay at the club. I love working with young players.
“He’s part of the DNA and myself and the club are working to try to extend his contract.”
